Remember that poll back in December for Chart Attack magazine? Here are the results, this is basically a Canadian vote, not enough appreciation for Danko Jones as usual
..................................................................................
After over a month of intense battle between various CanCon fan contingents, Chart Magazine’s 2003 Year-End Readers’ Poll (sponsored by Sympatico.ca) has come to a close. It’s been a long hard journey that’s fired up much ire on online bulletin boards across the land, but we finally have a concrete list of results. In the end, over 10,000 of you cast your vote, leaving us with the following list of winners:
The big winner in the Golden Toque (Best Canadian Album) is — surprise, surprise — Our Lady Peace with their Live album. This is the second win in a row for OLP, as they also won the top spot last year with their Gravity LP. Here’s a list of the rest of the Top 5:
2. Matthew Good — Avalanche
3. Sam Roberts — We Were Born In A Flame
4. Avril Lavigne — Let Go
5. I Mother Earth — The Quicksilver Meat Dream
After a vicious fight in the International Golden Toque (Best International Album) category, Radiohead made it to #1 with their Hail To The Thief. Chart readers have historically had a thing for thoughtful British pop, seeing as Coldplay won the IGT last year with A Rush Of Blood To The Head. That album was released late enough in 2002 that it was also eligible this year, and it came in just behind Radiohead, in second place. The rest of the Top 5 looked like this:
3. Clay Aiken — Measure Of A Man
4. The White Stripes — Elephant
5. Evanescence — Fallen
In the Blissful Noise (Best Song) category, you all did the honourable thing and voted for the late, great Johnny Cash. The Man In Black came in first place with his cover of Nine Inch Nails’ "Hurt." Coming in behind him were:
2. David Usher — "Time Of Our Lives"
3. Our Lady Peace — "Innocent"
4. Billy Talent — "Try Honesty"
5. Matthew Good — "In A World Called Catastrophe"
OK, it’s time for the category everyone’s been waiting for: The Throw Your Underwear (Sexiest Canadian Male) Award. Just like last year, you all can’t get enough of hunky hunky Raine Maida. Raine took this one is what can only be described as a "landslide." Here’s the rest of the Top 5 beefcakes:
2. Sam Roberts
3. David Usher
4. Ryan Malcolm
5. Brian Byrne (I Mother Earth)
Last year you picked Avril Lavigne as the Sexiest Canadian Female, but this year you went for someone more mature. Shania Twain is this year’s top lady. You also fancy:
2. Chantal Kreviazuk
3. Avril Lavigne
4. Kim Bingham
5. Bif Naked
The race was much closer in the Lord Mullet Of Stanley (Best Haircut) category. David Usher ended up taking the prize, beating Raine Maida by a mere three votes. You must all love that shiny, long ‘n’ shaggy look, since, you’ve gotta admit, both Raine and David have pretty similar haircuts. For a little variety, you also liked: 3. Sam Roberts
4. Shania Twain
5. Ian D’Sa (Billy Talent)
In the Follow The Herd (Stupidest Trend) category, you proved that the world still hates the phenomenon that is Bennifer. The other Top 5 lame-o cultural happenings were: 2. Ashton Kutcher
3. Ben Mulroney
4. Fake Punk Rock T-Shirts
5. Cocaine
As for videos, following the same trend as the Best Song category, Johnny Cash’s "Hurt" took the Thank You Very Much-LY (Best Video) award. Props also go out to The White Stripes, who had two videos in the Top 5, meaning they probably would have gone to #1 if the vote hadn’t been split. Here’s how it played out: 2. Radiohead — "There, There"
3. White Stripes — "The Hardest Button To Button"
4. White Stripes — "Seven Nation Army"
5. Simple Plan — "Perfect"
Some things never change — and that’s a good thing. For the gazillionth year in a row, Canadian Rock was #1 in the That Rocked (Sweet Happenings In Music This Year). You also liked: 2. Clay Aiken's Face
3. Free DVDs With CD Purchases
4. SARSstock
5. Johnny Cash
Finally, while some of you dug Clay Aiken, others wanted to put a muzzle on the almost-American Idol, as he came in second in the That Sucked (Stinky Happenings In Music This Year) category. But, even more than you hated Clay, you hated that stupid Madonna/Britney/Christina kiss that marred the MTV Video Music Awards. Other stupid musical events included: 3. American Idol
4. Chad Kroeger As Record Mogul
5. Canadian Idol
