Although he became know as the Prime Minister of the Blues here in Canada i doubt if anyone else on here has heard of Dutchie Mason. Of course, living here in his home Province of Nova Scotia and being a big blues fan, i've seen Dutchie perform many, many times, he's a gem, believe me. Now there's a book out,"On the Road with Dutch", which takes a zany but honest look at the madcap adventures of a touring band on the road in Canada with lots of amazing insider views at various clubs, hotels, etc. At the very least, this is a must read for touring Canadian bands, they'll recognize some names here for sure. Sadly, Dutchie is now wheel chair bound due to severe arthritis, but he still performs a bit with a mic fitted into his whithered hand, he's a trooper.

On the Road with Dutch Mason tells the story of Canadian blues icon Dutch Mason from the point of view of the band's harmonica player, David Bedford, who conducted interviews with the legendary musician, members of his band (current and past), family, friends, and peers. Writer (and musician) Harvey Sawler collaborates with Bedford to project Dutch's biography against the backdrop of an unreal ten-city road trip, a jaunt complete with benders, brawls, and musicians gone AWOL. They travel the Trans Canada Highway in guitarist Carter's beat-up van and Dutch's vintage Cadillac, but what transports them is a run of electrifying shows and story-filled, all-night, post-gig revelries. Much of what readers learn about "Dutchie" comes to them direct from scenes-some of them downright unbelievable-of the blues man's life. But Dutch is given the opportunity to speak at length in his own words as well. At long last, here is the life story of the Maritimes' favourite blues man-all from the unique perspective of Bedford, the most trustworthy insider of recent times.
