There must be another thread in here somewhere, but as usual, I'm too lazy to look for it. So here's a thread about good books. I'd like to start reading more, does anyone have any recommendations? Has anyone read "Haunted" by chuck palahniuk...I'm wondering if I should buy it. I really like spiritual books, shocking books, or subject books. Even just books which are really well written, or have lots of beautiful imagery.

I can tell you what I'm reading at the moment, but it doesn't sound like anything you'd like to read, Spun. I'm trying to improve my English by reading in English, but I wanted to start easy, so when I was In Canada I bought a Sophie Kinsella and I liked it. So now I'm reading another one of her books and after that I want to try something a little more difficult.

angela's ashes is great, and the movie is quite adorable as well. i'm reading teacher man to my english classes and they think it's hilarious. list of other titles worth checking out: the lovely bones Jonathan Strange and Mr. Norell Mirror, Mirror Wicked Crossing California Little by David Treuer A Heart Breaking Work of Staggering Genius and/or You Shall Know Our Velocity by Dave Eggers the dragon series by paolini (sp?) (one of my students was reading this and they two books already out are a bit childish but great great great fun.) anything by David Sedaris (if you like him, you can hear him read on a NPR program called "this american life" and you can listen to it online at their website, just do a site search for sedaris and be prepared to laugh. anything by toni morrison (last name sp?)
i could go on, but i won't. i'm a fiend for books and sort of collect them much like how many people collect records. xo, sheila

I'm reading the Ilias and Odyssey by Homer, (not simpson, but the ancient greek poet). Mighty interesting stuff, certainly if you've seen Troy and start to compare. Also, I've been reading up on my Greek and Roman mythology. Great stuff, better than most soap-opera's.

Awesome Loes & Fatty! I used to read a lot of mythology as a child. I think it's so cool that every culture has their own volumes, and style of folklore. Unfortunately, after you read so many different variations of stories, you start mixing them all together in your head (well i find i have anyway). I actually picked my bgirl name from one of my fav stories. It's "Psych3"(psyche) (yes I'm a geek) Lots of good books in the lists! I keep hearing about the "lovely bones" one...I'll have to pick it up. My friend is reading the (biography?) of anthony kiedis...I think I'll steal it off him when he's done. Does anyone have any recommendations on philosophers?

Does anyone have any recommendations on philosophers? That would depend on what branch of philosophy you are interested in. You can't go wrong with the classics like Plato or Aristotle. I'm fond of a guy by the name of David Patterson, who has written extensively on the Holocaust. He poses the question of how men as well educated as those who chose to implement the Final Solution could have been at moral peace with genocide. He ponders what, if any, role did their education play in this decision, what should we derive from education, what is the responsibility of our educational institutions, etc. I thought it was interesting stuff.

If you want to know something about Philosophy, you might want to read sophie's world by Jostein Gaarder. Although it is children's book, it gives a nice overlook over it.
