Ignorance is bliss or so they say. There is something that truly irritates me and that's when people generalize things and stick all the eggs in one basket and say "This is how it is."
What I mean by all of this is I have heard countless people jabber on about why they hate Hip Hop. "Oh Hip Hop is a bunch of people swearing...and talking about sex and violence."
"It breeds hate and violence...that's why the kids are killing eachother these days...all that rap music is such a bad influence."
"Well I don't listen to it because I don't understand it."
I find these statements so hilarious. People have so many excuses for why they won't open their minds to something.
First off...you have Hip Hop..then u have Rap...then you have Gangster Rap. You have old skool & new skool. You have people dedicated to the art form and the love of spreading knowledge and then you have the people in it for the "Ho's & the Bling, Bling." So, if you're going to put things into one category...please state which category they belong to before you pass judgements.
People cause their own sufferings whether it be hate or violence or any sort of disharmony. Look at how Rock & Roll was first treated when it came out. They burned records...it was "Satan's music." Are we not treating Hip Hop in the same scapegoat manner? People kill eachother...we have armies whose soul purpose is to destroy..yet nobody bats an eyelash when they blow up cities killing innocent children. But some Hip Hop performer talks about violence in our streets and they're a menace to society. People were hurting and killing eachother long before Hip Hop made an appearance. I have listened to Hip Hop for at least 15 yrs now...I have never been to jail or committed any crimes. If you have been instilled with proper value systems..then you know the difference between right and wrong. A song cannot make you do anything you did not already have the intention of doing. I personally believe Hip Hop has been a very positive influence in my life. It has a whole artistic culture base and has developed and channelled a lot of my creative energies. With Hip Hop you have the 4 elements - break'n, graffiti,mc'n, dj'n. Which involve the major artistic groups - music (vocal & intsrumental), visual art and dance....all of which have tremendously influenced my life. Are we now saying that artistic exploration and freedom are wrong?
And who in the world understands every word to every song the first time they hear it? Please! Most songs from the 50's/60's have alternative meanings to the lyrics anyway...they weren't allowed most of the time to say what they really meant!
With ANY and EVERY genre..u have the good, the bad, and the ugly. You can't put all Hip Hop into one basket. If you do, you're the one choosing to be ignorant and don't really have any backing on passing any sort of reliable judgement.
So educate...before you hate!
