Danko Jones :: Sleep is The Enemy

CD Review

Canadian power rock trio DANKO JONES are back and they are back with one hell of an attitude! The band's latest release, 'SLEEP IS THE ENEMY', will knock you on your ass once you hit play. On the band's two previous releases, 'Born A Lion' and 'We Sweat Blood', Danko Jones gave fair warning to the world that they are here to stay! 'SLEEP IS THE ENEMY' will simply make your jaw drop. IT'S A JUGGERNAUT! I shit you not, this is Danko Jones doing what he does best, rocking with unbridled passion and reckless abandon. The production on 'SLEEP IS THE ENEMY'is as tight as a virgin on her wedding night, yet not messing with the rawness and bad ass power of Danko Jones' sound. There will be those who are going to compare Danko Jones with other bands, as far as describing the band's sound. The most obvious is AC/DC mostly because of the sheer bare-bones power-chord energy mixed with fiery blues heart and soul. But make no mistake, Danko Jones have a sound that is all its own. As is evident from the moment you hit play (its like pulling a pin from a grenade) and "Sticky Situation" explodes like a bat out of hell, from your speakers. Other songs that will shake your foundation, are the lead off single, "First Date", the balls out rocker, "Baby Hates Me" and the guitar laden super prime movers, "Don't Fall In Love" and "The Finger". Danko's message with 'SLEEP IS THE ENEMY' is perfectly clear and to the point; women are dangerous and addictive. 'SLEEP IS THE ENEMY' is a balls out rocker of a release that will finally give Danko Jones, the recognition and respect that they truly deserve. If you like loud, guitar riffs, this is the album for you. Forget the garbage on the radio, THIS is rock 'n roll. If you wanna get YOUR ROCKS OFF BIG TIME, get your hands on Danko Jones' 'SLEEP IS THE ENEMY', pop it in your player and crank it to the MAXIMUM. Warn the neighbors!
From Kings of A&R:
Danko Jones’ new album ‘Sleep Is The Enemy’ made my stereo ooze so much testosterone it impregnated my television and started a fight club with my xbox. While it has the depth of a shot glass, Sleep Is The Enemy is filled to the brim with fist pumping, sing-along, balls out rock anthems of aggressive machismo. Recently having their song ‘Baby Hates Me’ featured on WWE’s Wrestlemania 22, Danko Jones are solidifying their place in the angst-ridden broken hearts of beer swilling men everywhere and no doubt winning over some ladies along the way. Being a Canadian and following Danko Jones is difficult. It’s similar to watching an ex-lover go on to fame and fortune without you. You know the situation. For whatever reason you cheated on her or screwed things up, it’s a few years later and her face is plastered all over some billboard and she’s off living the high life and won’t return your calls. Same thing with Danko. The band is now a staple on the Western European rock scene and their previous album, We Sweat Blood, is gaining major buzz in the States. Still you can’t help but wish Danko would just kiss and make up – return to Canada and give all the haters their just deserts.
Sleep is the Enemy builds on the intensity of We Sweat Blood. The band is still filled with the same blood, spit and raw energy that garnished them acclaim as a powerful live act in the clubs of Canada. JC’s bass lines and Damon’s powerful drumming are as tightly woven as ever. Still, it’s Danko’s gut-wrenching and soulful lyrics which are the core of the record. Case in point: on ‘Invisible’ Danko screams - “I’ll rip my eyes just for you/I’ll slash my wrist just for you/I’ll break my dick off just for you/I’ll make my momma cry!” A lesser singer couldn’t even toy with such subject manner, but this is the Mango Kid, the Mocha Moses. He’s a street preacher and when the lyrics spew from his venomous mouth you want to join his crusade to win back his woman.
On Sleep, the band expands further on their sound. ‘Invisible’ includes backing vocals from John Garcia of Kyuss, while the vindictive ‘Time Heals Nothing’ begins with an eerie drum sample. Will these new changes break the boys in the states? If the southern masses are willing to succumb to the rawk gospel according to Danko - you bet it will. Songs like ‘Baby Hates Me’, ‘She’s Drugs’, and ‘Time Heals’ are nothing but pure fire, soul and rock. While Sleep is the Enemy is not a classic like Born a Lion, it is a little more Danko to tide you over until the boys reinvade their homeland

If there's one thing Danko Jones know how to do at this point, it's how to rock. They did it in We Sweat Blood, and it's exactly what they do again in their fifth full-length album, Sleep Is the Enemy. The formula for both these albums has been pretty consistent: fast power chords with a distorted bass echoing the guitar; loud, driving drums; and vocals that fluctuate from a low growl to a mellifluous croon to a full-out scream. But that doesn't mean the new album is ever boring: there's too much raw emotion and sexual energy to allow anyone even a brief moment to nod off. For the band, this is a very important thing; the name of the record is Sleep Is the Enemy, after all, and the simple, to-the-point choruses are just meant to be shouted along to in packed, sweaty stadiums. Jones himself is all testosterone and bravado and is in great form vocally, expressing his indifference toward a jaded lover in "Baby Hates Me," instructing the less confident in when and how to give "The Finger," and angrily yelling his plans for revenge in "Time Heals Nothing." Yes, the themes here, like they always have been with the band, are women and sex and aggression, which are practically the same thing for Jones, but in Sleep Is the Enemy his willingness to explore the ambiguity of the topics shows his (slightly greater) maturity. In "She's Drugs" (which contains the fantastically catchy chorus "She's drugs, she's drugs/Just one look and you get addicted/She's drugs, she's drugs/You take a look and now you're hooked, that's what I predicted"), he chides a friend for being seduced by a dangerous woman, but then in "Invisible," he goes on to list a number of extreme things he'll do for another who isn't noticing him (burning his house down, maxing out his credit card, and making his mother cry being three of the least violent examples). Yeah, Sleep Is the Enemy isn't musical genius by any standard, but it is a loud, confident, straightforward, and fun album that skips guitar solos and instrumental frills to focus on what truly matters to Danko Jones: rocking.
