recently, I'm really getting into hiphop more and more. and along with artists like blackalicious, looptroop or ugly duckling, I discovered mos def.
and, holy shit, "black on both sides" really got me hooked. Intelligent lyrics, a great flow & nice beats emerge into one hell of a record. and the best is, it grows. it is laid back, it is powerful, it is deep and it's got some very, very cool collabos on it (e.g. "do it now" w/busta rhymes & "mista nigga" w/ the infamous q-tip)
get it. it will keep you entertained for ages.

Thanks for that Natty, definetly a rising star in the hip-hop world, who had previously be relatively unknown. Certainly was the case for me anyway, you can learn more, including some joints from 'black on both sides' here: www.geocities.com/mosdef2002/

Mos is definitely a multi-talented dude. In addition to being an underground veteran in the rap game, he's an emerging actor! He's been in movies like Monsters Ball and more recently, The Italian Job. He's a true superstar in the making.
Here's something to check out Natty; Mos Def got his start in a duo called Blackstarr. The other rapper in Blackstarr was a cat named Talib Kweli. Talib Kweli has quietly emerged as one of the best and most respected rappers around (and one of my favourites.) His last solo record Quality is little over a year old - but was definitely one of 2002's best.
Both Mos Def and Talib Kweli are talented underground emcees on the verge of stardom.

Mos Def caught me with "Re-definition". But I do agree he is a very talented artist. I like his collab works. If you like Mos....how about Common?

Common is another sick lyricist. I want to call him underrated but headz have started to recognize him in recent years. His last record Electric Circus was a little uneven though. Common is a guy who has yet to deliver his masterpiece.

You think? Some of Common's older stuff is pretty bombz. I like the way he puts things together....."It don't take a whole day to recognize sunshine." -Common

Re-reading my post now, I make it sound like his records aren't that good. That's misleading - all of them are very good, I'm just saying that I think he will one day put out a record better than all the others.
When you quote some of his lyrics, I can't help but think of good he really is!
"I hold the mic like a memory / You say I'm nice with metaphors but these are similies" -- Common from '1999'
