I was watching that Divas contest the other night on MuchMoreMusic. It's sort of like American Idol, but only for female singers. Anyway, the end of the show was a concert by Stevie Wonder doing a medley of his biggest hits accompanied by a series of who's-who of Divas. Shania, Whitney, Chaka Khan, Jewel, Beyonce and so on. It just reminded me again of the musical genius of this man. He was the first Motown artist to really be given creative control over his own work. Up until then everything coming from Motown was carefully orchestrated and manufactured much like Nashville is today. There was a handful of writers (Smokey Robinson, Marvin Gaye) penning tunes for everone else. Litltle Stevie changed all that and also bridged the gap between white audiences and black music. A true icon. My cover band does Higher Ground and Superstition and those tunes still work will all age groups. The man WAS funk.

Ya Kev, i caught that show as well, it was excellent. Stevie was a great performer with the huge album " songs in the key of life" containing many chart busters. R&B for the most part is very much overlooked nowadays but man was that stuff great listening. How could we ever forget the likes of Chuck Berry, Wilson Pickett, Aretha etal. Getting back to the show for a sec, I was floored at the voice from Chaka Khan, I don't remember her being this good, wow. Beyonce, mmmaaann. ;D

I'm sorry to have missed the performance. But i'm sure a couple of those divas weren't fit to share the stage with Stevie. I can't believe some of people who are considered divas these days. And to have an honour of performing with a man who performed shows to all white audiences in Alabama and had them on their feet with classics such as "Superstition"....and to stink up his performance with their sucky voices is a tragedy in itself. I don't think it would have been Mary J. Blige...if Ashanti was there I'm positive it was her. She has been labelled as the queen of Hip Hop and clearly isn't fit to wear that crown. Her voice is horrible. And Beyonce was there? She may have the attitude of a Diva but not the talent of one. If u ever have the chance check out India Arie's cd "Accoustic soul"l. Stevie is her idol, she even dedicates a song to him it's called "Stevie Wonderful" and this gal has an absolutely beautiful voice with a personality to match.

My memory is starting to kick into gear, I'm 99.9% sure it was Ashanti, makes sense. Of course Mary J. has never done anything poorly, it was definelty not her.
