how come some bands are not well known or popular in home countries, but are in other countries? Its really difficult to pinpoint what's missing over here, I feel that its a combo of factors such as:--Media, we all know the power of this medium as a publicity tool, In Canada we have 2 music networks (muchmusic) and MTV Canada. Both of these mostly show top 100 current top sellers vids. That's ok, but apparently there is a nasty side of this biz called 'play for pay' where one label can really pump up sales by paying to have their stuff played more..no way would the MK lower himself to that. So we get an endless run of Britney, Christina, etc stuff, not much of Danko, ever. Then there is the vast size of our country, Danko does extensive touring here, but man, its impossible to unite us all, there are plenty of DJ fans here, but we just can't seem to put it together. Then there's just plain old apathy, except for hockey, its a difficult task to get a Canadian passionate about anything, we need, we deserve, a big kick in the ass. I could never figure out why the band loves u guys so much, but now I know, u guys have amazing spirit, where it comes to Danko Jones, Europe Rawks.

*laughs* Anyways, I think media indeed plays a very important role in this case. None of our three music networks has ever played Danko Jones as far as I know, but he has been on TV quite regularly on 'normal' networks and he has been on the radio quite often. I suppose we have a large alternative audience that wants to hear this kind of music. Next to that, our country's pretty small so good news spreads quickly ^_^

Well I have to say this Rocky; YOU CANADIANS RAWK TO!!!! Somehow I've got a weak spot for Canadian bands! I liked The Tragically Hip, The Tea Party, Uncle Neil (Young) ofcourse, & now it's DJ again. What else has Canada hidden for us?? Any other good bands we don't know of???

Canada had a sensational band that just broke up after 12 years, 'The Headstones' they were awesome, another one rumored to be finished, 'I Mother Earth'. We have a vastly under-rated rawker chick 'Bif Naked', wow, she's terrific....then there's errr aww'Nickelback', Sam Roberts (excellent possiblities) many, many more, I'll need help here from Tidy & GBV, u see they live in Ontario, where its all at, i live in a black hole called Nova Scotia ,fiddles, bagpipes rule here, ouch!!!

I have a recommendation! The fine Toronto punk band Billy Talent just released their first record on Universal Canada (Danko Jones' label) about a week before WSB came out, and it ain't bad at all.
Their first single Try Honesty is all over the radio right now, and like Danko Jones they've garnered quite a reputation for being an extraordinarily good live act. I would love to see BT and DJ tour together!
Rocky, I know you're a sucker for a cool bassline - try downloading Cut The Curtains by Billy Talent. You'll like it.
Also recommended is The Constantines, a band which was born in my lil home town of London, but relocated to Guelph and then Toronto. They sound a bit like like Fugazi (or Minor Threat) and I hear they're pretty good live too.
Sloan is also worth checking out, but I'd recommend their older CDs over their newer stuff. Especially Twice Removed and Navy Blues. And they're a fun live band.
I find the Tragically Hip a tad dull, but Gordon Downie is one of the best lyricists I can think of. His solo stuff is a little more interesting. He's even done a book of poetry that didn't suck!
That's all I can think of off the top of my head.

Hey thanks Tidy, much appreciated. In Praising my fellow Canadians i also forgot PsyCro, he's GBV's brother. I'm goona start passing out halos, u see folks, any Canadian member coming on here rawkin the MK is a very special person, we are blessed with the Danko spirit, we have a hard time finding each other, (he waves), its nice. Take Oct.10th at Lee's Palace in Toronto for example, GBV managed to put a party of 21 ( including PsyCro) together that's simply amazing, big props to the G-man. Tidy was there, Spun was there ( not positive, most likely). A quick glance at our membership will reveal many other Canadian members, but some of them just joined to help us out, and very many have signed-up but have yet to post Come out of hiding, don't be shy!!
