I hadn't bothered to look at this thread before, but I like the idea of it so I will contribute to it.
These are all of the records I've picked up since the beginning of the year:
AC/DC - Poowerage -- Another fun AC/DC record. I got it on a sweet 2 for $18 deal. The other album I picked up on the deal was...
AC/DC - For Those About to Rock We Salute You -- It is the first AC/DC album I've heard that isn't strong from top to bottom. It kind of feels like a derivative of previous material.
Ryan Adams - 29 -- There isn't a bad song on the record, but it is still easily the weakest of his releases in 2005 (he released two other albums last year, one of which was a double album!). That's not to say that I don't enjoy the record, it is just that I like the other two a whole lot more.
The Arcade Fire - The Arcade Fire (EP) -- It is not as strong as Funeral, but for a band's first release it is pretty damn good and shows the promise which they would realize on their debut full-length.
Black Rebel Motorcycle Club - Howl -- It is very different from their previous albums, but just as enjoyable and I might call it their best album to date. I like it a lot.
Neko Case - Fox Confessor Brings the Flood -- Absolutely lovely. Neko's voice is simply stunning.
Jason Collett - Idols of Exile -- This is still in high rotation for me. It gets as much time in my CD player as Danko's new album. I need more time to put in perspective, but I might call it the best roots rock album ever (that was not recorded by Neil Young).
Danko Jones - Sleep is the Enemy -- I'm sure you all already know that I love it.
Jenny Lewis & the Watson Twins - Rabbit Fur Coat -- See comments about Neko Case and substitute Neko's name for Jenny's.
Outkast - Speakerboxxx / The Love Below -- I know I'm a few years late, but I finally decided to get the record. I almost wish I hadn't. Both albums are too long and have too many clunkers. They could've tightened things up to make it good. Better yet, had they taken say 6 or 7 tracks from each disc and put it out as out album then it might have lived up to all of the hype and critical acclaim. The Love Below is powerfully weak. It only has about 6 or 7 good tracks. When it is good it is phenomenal, but when it's not it blows. Speakerboxxx, on the other hand, is really tight through the first 9 tracks, then gets shaky. Overall, it is the better of the two discs. And, here, I thought André 3000 was supposed to be the genius. While he turns in some incredible songs, Big Boi takes more chances and records a disc that easily exceeds his partner's album.
You Say Party! We Say Die! - Hit the Floor -- Awesome. You Say Party! We Say Die! is my latest kick. It rocks and makes me want to shake my ass and boogie woogie throughout the whole thing. I don't think many people outside of the west coast (Vancouver area) know about them, which is a shame. I think people will be hearing a lot more about them in the coming years. I found out about them through New Music Canada, liked what I heard and bought the record (it was hard to find; I had to go to Toronto to get it, and even then the only store stocking it was the big HMV on Younge and they were only carrying one copy). I was not disappointed.
