I honestly dont think JayZ is the greatest rapper of all time...get the eff outta here. He's on the list, but not number 1.
10 of all time... I don't think eminem should be on there. Talib should definately be on there somewhere, I love his flo. And I'm partial to common.
You can't really make a 10 of all time though. That's lame. IN the early 80's rap was a lot different from today. How can u compare skill when it keeps progressing over the years? I don't know though, what are these nominations based on? How does the grading work? Different artists have different styles..what is the greatness based on? It's more like: top ten favourites of that person of all time.
I was never the biggest biggie fan but his lyrics are alright for the most part. They're kind of street logic though, not intellectual. So it really depends on what greatness means? I think cannibus is pretty strong too, but he has some years to go.
I wonder who'll be on the list in 20 years...little jon..."YEAAH...WHUT?"

I probably won't make it to 10 but rappers I DO like are the guys from Run DMC and De La Soul aaaaaand... Kanye West. I like it how his lyrics and style are different from practically all other modern rappers. He isn't about the ho's and the pimps and the cribs and blah blah.

De La Soul rocks and so does KRS-One (if you get a chance to see him live, DO IT) Newish rappers: JayZ I like, and I really dig Mike Shinoda's stuff. One of the better rappers in rock (plus he started with hiphop before Linkin Park). But I prefer old school over new.

For a couple of years now I've been considering the possiblitly that Jay-Z may in fact be the GOAT. I think Biggie's greatest pupil surpassed the master years ago - although that opinion is still near blasphemous amongst most rap fans. This list (which first appeared as a VH-1 special) is the first time I've seen one that considered Jay-Z as the all time champ. Here is their rationale: Rank: 1 TestimonialIs Jay really not just "the best rapper alive," but the greatest of all time? Just look at what Hov's done for the game: He has headlined several major hip-hop tours and brought along his peers, rapped alongside a Beatle at the Grammys and thugged out Madison Avenue, emphasizing that a rapper's clothing line or brand of sneaker can be successful. Now Jay is proving that a "retired" MC can get focused and rep hard as the prez of major record company. So what about Jay's life on the mic? Well, since 1998, Jigga has been the most consistently excellent MC in the game, and it seems like he's at his apex every year. He is one of only a handful of MCs whose flow is so potent that his tongue can effortlessly glide over any track and still destroy a verse with line-for-line firepower. Hov's first-hand narratives have become a thing of legend, whether he told us about his resentment and ultimate forgiveness of his father, his brushes with love, his endless nights of partying, or riding dirty with cocaine in his trunk. Jigga’s influence is beyond question: If he does it or wears it, chances are his fans and peers will do the same. With S. Dot hinting about stepping back into the vocal booth for another LP, chances are good that his legacy has not yet seen its zenith. Co-Signer: Kool G Rap"That dude is a genius with his craft. He's got all the qualities that it takes for somebody to blow up to superstardom. He's got character, he's got lyrics, he knows how to put songs together. His wittiness. I'm the type of rapper that I try to make my stuff as witty as possible. Jay-Z comes up with some real clever lines to say. From the time he came out up till now, he grew musically — not so much lyrically. He was crazy lyrical on his first album. He grew musically as far as what plays on that radio and what bumps in that club. I think he just mastered that sh--. Dude is in a class by himself. Dudes ain't even touching him as far as I'm concerned." 100 Percent Proof"Saw the devil in your eyes/ High off more than weed/ Confused, I just closed my young eyes and squeezed/ What a sound/ Opened my eyes just in time to see ya stumbling to the ground/ 'Damn? What the fuck I done now?'... Like a stranger, damn!/ I just shot my nigga/ And ran off into the night as if it was not my nigga." — from "You Must Love Me" (from In My Lifetime, Vol. 1, 1997) Selected Catalog*Reasonable Doubt (1996), In My Lifetime, Vol. 1 (1997), *Vol. 2: Hard Knock Life (1998), Streets Is Watching (soundtrack, 1998), Vol. 3: Life and Times of S. Carter (1999), *The Dynasty Roc la Familia (2000), *The Blueprint (2001), Unplugged (2001), The Blueprint 2: The Gift & the Curse (2002), The Best of Both Worlds (2002, with R. Kelly), The Black Album (2003), Unfinished Business (2004, with R. Kelly), Collision Course (2004, with Linkin Park). * = undeniable classic

For the touring part, you could say all that about dre, cept for the clothing line. Also puff daddy probably has done most of those things and probably makes more than jayz...dont make him good. Rappin with a beatle don't make u #1 either. It just means you both need some money and more publicity. As for the end credits, making music with R kelly, takes all your credit away from you . I don't buy it...#1 spot is denied by spun. I want to see them battle it out for #1. Put mr. bootylicious agains KRS 1. Take him back to the 80s and throw him in with BIG daddy kane R.A.W...wit all that hova shit. He aint comin out victorious. Freestyle for #1. And televise it. They should also have the 10 greatest groups listing. But even the greatest? How many different styles are there, and what about underground music? Theres comical, gangsta, conscious, political,"emo",pothead, religious, blended lyricists. Old school, new school. East, west. Uptown, downtown. Intellectual and street lyricists. Poor rappers, rich rappers. Teachers, preachers, students, apprentices. What makes the best better than the rest? Words, flo, style, music, knowledge, years in the game, money, creativity, passion - what? Just for arguments sake, its something to consider.

Jay-Z is #1. I have spoken.
Hehe, all right, whatever. Maybe these rankings are pointless, but we rap headz have always done it. We argue about who the best rappers are, just like people argue about who the best heavyweight boxer of all time is.
Pointless? Maybe. Fun? Absolutely.
The PPV freestyle method to settle who the greatest is wouldn't work at all. Freestyling is one small part of what makes a great MC. Most of my favourite rappers are great writers, not great freestlyers.
If I could tweak that list a little bit, I'd bump Ice Cube and LL in favour of Black Thought (from the Roots) and probably Common. As much as I love Talib Kweli, he's only two albums deep, and his second record was good but not great.
But I don't think it's fair to penalize Hov for the R Kelly and Linkin Park collabos - those were just side projects. These guys point out that S-dot has 4 "undeniable classics" and they don't even count The Black Album, which I think is another classic.
No other rap artist has that many great records. It's the combination of longevity and consistency that I love.

Jayz can kiss my muthaeffin gritz. I honestly don't know who I'd pick though. The more I listen to big daddy kane, the more I love big daddy kane. The first hip hop album I ever bought was "bigger and deffer" -LL cool J. Krs 1 always gets stuck in my brain. Tupac is always someone I listen to for a perspective. Someone who's #1, is more likely someone I probably respect as a person and an artist, who's lyrics always ring true. And who's music can resound through the years kind of thing..like big daddy kane. I just started listening to big daddy kane not too long ago. In 20 years are people still gonna be listening to jayz or eminem? Honestly, I have never listened to much of JayZ, so to me, he must not have that "something." I don't know why. He makes alot of money, so people must like him. But see I could go my whole life never having really listened to jay z and not really care, whereas if these other artists never existed, I think I'd really be missing out on something. I think #1 is probably not even on this list. But I can't really think of who it might be.

Here I am R - A - W A terrorist here to bring trouble to Phony emcees I move on and sieze I just conquer and stomp another rapper with ease
Kane was impossibly smooth.
One last thing I'll say about Jay-Z, and then I'm going to leave it alone: If you've only listened to the songs that were on the radio, I totally understand why you don't think he belongs on the list.
The only real criticizm I have of him is that on every album, he would throw out a few songs that were blatant concessions to pop radio. He totally followed B.I.G.'s blueprint that way. But if you can look past the pop star the artist is easy to see on the other songs.

Kanye rocks, saw his liveshow a while back and it was one of the better hiphop shows I've seen in a LONG time. Most shows are about the bling and the ho's but this show was about the performance and showmanship. That's what I like about Kanye, he's got some great beats (together with Just Blaze) and his lyrics aren't about howmuch money he has or how many women he boinked. They're about real life issues and stuff like that. Plus he makes for great photo's

Awesome shot, man. Kanye is one of the biggest talents in hip hop right now. He's a great producer and an underrated rapper.

Lol "underrated?" U think? Every album he's put out has gotten crazy reviews, people can't stop praising the man. I like some of kanyes stuff though. Just was kinda bummed he tried to remake "move on up". That was a lofty ideal my friend.
My biggest advice to all hip hop/r&b artists in general: DO NOT remake, or remix songs if you can't make it sound better than the original. Don't even sample sometimes. I can't stress that enough.

You know what I realized, female rappers need to step up their game, because theres no ladies on that list. And to think of it, there arent even many ladies in the place. Who aint in the booty shorts.

Who aint in the booty shorts. Not many are good. I'm not into female rap all too much, but Lil Kim used to have respect as one of the better female rappers, but don't think that's still the case

The Source Magazine has given Lil Kim's last two records 4 1/2 and 5 mics respectively. 5 mics is the mags highest rating, which means they rated the record - called The Naked Truth - a "hip hop classic." (Trust me, it's not.)
It turned out that Lil Kim's manager or publicist or somebody like that was fucking one of the Source's editors. Too funny. And that mag used to have such integrity.
But in fairness, I think Little Kimberly is a really good rapper.
I will say though that if I was to write a list of my 20 fave rap artists ever, I'm almost positive there wouldn't be a female on the list. Not sure why exactly.

Ya me too tidy...its just kinda disappointing though that there isn't a female artist that blows me away. But still I do like some female artists: queen latifah, mc lyte, salt n peppa, foxy brown (whom I actually used to really dislike), a bit of charli baltimore. Missy does her thing. I like a couple tunes from masia 1 - I think shes from mississauga. Actually bombz I saw maestro a while back, the rest of his songs are useless, but "let your backbone slide" got everyone going crazy. Actually my favourite rap artist of all time is aaron carter. He can throw a houseparty like nobodys business.
