I'd like to retract prior statements, in which I gave props to a certain "toronto" "hip hop" artist. www.canada.com/topics/entertainment/story.html?id=1f70bd7c-35fa-46b9-bb9f-a55cb29c5ace&k=97556 (also check myspace...theres a war ) If you can't take the heat stay out tha kitchen. Why are you making music if you can't take criticism? I seem to recall a song by said artist "dont get high off your own supply"...its apparent you are high on your supply and everyone elses. I bought the album...because it was $10. I do like 3-4 songs on it..I'm not going to lie because I can practice to them...but I'm not hearing anything new or particularly inventive, you havent even come up with new lyrics. Sounds like the last album only with a lot more hype and different colour packaging. A) If you were really about "hip hop"...you could take a hit...without acting like a child and resorting to name calling -"Stanko Jones" how gr. 3 of you. B) You aren't a bboy...you don't break dance. Most of your songs and lyrics are catchy..they are pop. Just accept it. Who cares, youre making money. Its not like you had some rep or true street cred to live up to. C) By acting like such a fool...you have thrown most of your audience off from supporting you in the future. Nice move. If I don't buy your next album...are you going to call me "done-shuga"? Youre an idiot..and I'm an idiot for even responding to such nonsense.

Wow, what a friggin' baby. I'm a moderate K-OS fan because there are definitely pop elements to his music and I'm not necessarily into full-fledged hip hop but this whole outburst makes the guy sound like a loser. Kudos for writing in Danko.

I wish you could still read his "Stanko" comments, but alas, his myspace blogs seem to have been taken down.
Joyful Rebellion was a hot record, but the glowing reviews it got seem to have gone to K-OS's head. Now, he seems to have an arrogant sense of entiltlement. Like spun said, he's high off his own supply.
I haven't felt compelled to even download the new K-os record, because that new song "Sunday Morning" is even wacker then Crabbukit.
I had to smile when Danko referred to Broken Social Scene as the "white middle class version of G-Unit."

Anyone who has the audacity to use the word "Disco" in his new album title deserves more than bad reviews.
With reacting to a bad review like that, I'm sure that, too many people, he just dug his own grave. Bye bye respect.
I'll stick to being a Stanko Jones fan, thank you very much.

Here was K-OS's full response on his myspace page. I was sent this by a friend but when I went to check for myself all the blogs were taken off.
If I had any remaining respect for K-OS it was all lost when he could only come back with this silly response. I really thought he was more of a wordsmith than this.
K-OS goes off again on MySpace:
"i learned in university that the those who work in the media can at times be like the only person in a dark room with a flashlight. Essentially wherever they point the light in the room ...those in that room- if they want light ..are forced to look in the direction of the pointer.
Thats alot of power!
as i continue to watch the- NOW magazine- Jason Richards tandem doing their BEST OF to discredit the chicanery of that character k-os.. i cant help but take back my comment about Jason Richards.. that is - about him being an uncle tom - he is now i think closer to an Uncle Tim! that makes more sense - you learnt well from Mr. Perlich he is your daddy!! hope that cheque is a nice one! btw. people should check for the rap record Jason recently released where he plays the character of i think ..a banker or something of the sort - hiding behind that type of concept album and of course his lack of real rap SKILLS will no doubt clear up why he had to explain himself so agressively in today's NOW!(i will review his record at my new site FUTURE MAGAZINE.com launching DEC 1st.
stay tuned.!!
In retrospect i look at how all this went down and i snicker a little .. but i am also a little sad that the dialouge between artist and critic might never be an honest one... Its funny but we seem to need each other.. very ironic! I think Mr. Richards is less like a sambo NOW and more like.. lets see... YES! Arnold Drummond.. yes from that show Different Strokes.. "whatchyou talkin bout Willis" rememeber that? It was a story of a rich white man that 'takes in' 2 less fortunate African America children. He takes them into his Penthouse and tries to give them a better life... its true ..Madonna was not the first. As the two brothers clowned each other.. wondered if they were black enough and tried to adjust to a rich lifestlye in dwntn NYC- we all watched the akward but endearing 80's scenario.. and i wondered at times if it was a subversive muraL about the life of Africans in North America.
is NOW magazine like Philiph Drummond the third? A culture savvy business man who feels he can take on the task of raising two black boys? You people can check out the magazine and decide that. One thing is for sure tho.. Black on Black battles still sell and and Jason Richards might actually have the spirit of a dope EMCEE if he would have the balls to pick up the microphone and not hide behind tape recorders!! check out Now magazine dot com-- his words are heated and k-os looks HOT!
ps. also check out my rock group coming out this summer not sure about the name i think we will call it STANKO JONES ...lead single Segers Son. trust me we will do our best to reach NOBODY AT ALL!
pss. Conngrats to Shawn Hewitt who was picked as NOW's BEST OF for music he is signed to our label Crown Loyalist Recordings.. YOU CANNOT ESCAPE US!
psss. excuse the typos and rushed writing .. i gotta an interview now!
peace

I really thought he was more of a wordsmith than this. Only logical to expect from a rapper. It's so fucking childish to react like that. I just read the review and trust me, I've read worse reviews than that. Much, much worse. Hell, this review was cute as a kitten compared to some of the reviews I've read. And then, to call a fellow black man a racist because he doesn't agree with you? That's plain pathetic. Every one who knows me knows that racism is one of my pet hates, but I hate people who pretend to be racist victims for no reason about just as much. I hope for Mr. K-Os that he's not planning a big breakthrough in Holland or even Europe. Because with that attitude, he's not getting jack shit.

You got that right! What a bunch of rambling, incoherent nonsense!
What's funny is that Danko gets criticized for the banality of his lyrics, when K-os dupes people with cheap, pseudo-philosophizing to hide the fact that he ain't saying shit.
I love that his only retort to Danko Jones is calling him "Stanko" and implying he's a Bob Seger ripoff.
Thanks for posting that, Danko.

Chart Attack picked up the story: Danko Jones Ignites Feud With K-OS Tuesday October 31, 2006 @ 06:00 PM By: ChartAttack.com Staff
A bubbling feud between K-OS, Canadian hip-hop's top dog, and NOW Magazine, a Toronto-based alternative weekly, now has a third party lumbering into the fray: T.O.-bred, Euro-famous rock 'n' roller, Danko Jones.
It's an emerging fight that could turn Toronto's Queen Street into a musical Gaza Strip. The catalyst for all of this, the assassination of Arch-Duke Franz Ferdinand if you will, came in the form of NOW (and former Chart) writer Jason Richards' review of K-OS' Atlantis — Hymns For Disco album in their October 5 edition. Richards gave the album three out of five, characterizing K-OS as "a crossover pop artist disguised as a true-school b-boy." K-OS responded to the review on his MySpace page, calling Richards "Sambo" and an "Uncle Tom" who's being "manipulated by his indie-rock nerd bosses."
Upon hearing about the K-OS-NOW feud, Jones weighed in on NOW's October 19 letters page, saying K-OS has "had too much sunshine massaged up his ass," while adding that K-OS compadre Kevin Drew of Broken Social Scene was "the white middle-class version of G-Unit."
K-OS' further response, a humorous missive that's been lighting up inboxes, recants on the original "Sambo" comment, only to compare Richards instead to Arnold Drummond (sic, Arnold Jackson), the Gary Coleman character of late-'70s sitcom, Diff'rent Strokes.
K-OS saves his Jones address for the post-script of his letter, saying, "also check out my rock group coming out this summer not sure about the name i think we will call it STANKO JONES ...lead single Segers Son. trust me we will do our best to reach NOBODY AT ALL!"
Jones, for his part, wasn't impressed when ChartAttack asked him if he, according to rumour, did in fact smell funny.
"I thought K-OS was a wordsmith?" says Jones. "Why can't he come up with a better insult? I was pretty unimpressed and almost disappointed. A five-year-old could come up with something wittier than 'Stanko Jones.'"
And the "Segers Son" comment? Also puzzling. Was K-OS suggesting Jones was fathered by "Like A Rock" rocker Bob Seger? Or maybe folkie Pete Seeger?
"Definitely not Pete, 'cause folk music is lame," says Jones. "I kind of thought that was a lame response from him, too."
As far as K-OS attempting to make a rock record is concerned, Jones has faint praise for the idea.
"K-OS make a rock record? I'm sure he thinks he can. He can do whatever he wants. If it rocks, I might even buy, er, download it," says Jones, who, if the situation was reversed, suggests a Danko Jones rap record would "probably" have more "rap" on it than a K-OS record. "Or at least it wouldn't have Sam Roberts on it."
We also got Jones to clarify his claim that Drew is like a more beardy, dishevelled and less bullet-riddled version of 50 Cent, the leader of the G-Unit posse. The concern is that if Drew was 50, wouldnn't that make BSS cohort Brendan Canning like Lloyd Banks?
"I love Brendan Canning," says Jones. "He's probably the only one in both camps with his head on his shoulders.
"While 50 Cent and Lloyd Banks might put a hit out on you, Kevin Drew would probably just put a social hit on you and tell everyone you like Staind and Hoobastank behind your back."
To read about K-OS' non-feuding activities, and to behold one of Chart's most elaborate photo shoots ever, check out our November 2006 issue with K-OS on the cover here.
K-Drew and his BSS-Unit posse are featured on the cover of Chart's March 2006 edition. You can find more about that one here.
And for a super-special limited time, we're unearthing three rare copies of our officially sold-out February 2000 Chart edition with Danko Jones on the cover. If you want one, it'll cost the same as ordering the K-OS issue. Email chart@chartattack.com.

I don't give a shit about the feuds and who doesn't like who and what not. I think K-os shouldn't give a shit what kind of reviews he gets. And it is unfortunate that he's become very defensive about his work - I don't know if that is telling that he has a lack of self confidence or self esteem - but that does not negate that I think his new record is great. I would even go so far as to say it is better than his last one. It is among my favourite records of the year (I rank it up there with Danko's).

"While 50 Cent and Lloyd Banks might put a hit out on you, Kevin Drew would probably just put a social hit on you and tell everyone you like Staind and Hoobastank behind your back. HAHAHAHAHAAAAA You know...he probably started this whole stupid thing just to get a hype about his new album. Start controversy to get people talking. I totally agree with the sunshine massaging. And you know maybe I wouldnt comment if he were some phenomenal artist...just having a bad day and taking it out on everyone else...but he isnt. He's kevin from whitby...and he sings about crabs in a bucket. He should be thankful someone cares enough to review his albums. I think the truly sad thing about a lot of music is that you probably should just like music for music...and not for the "artists" making the music. For instance saying "Hey I really like blankity blank" but in reality "blankity blank" is probably a complete ass, and you end up supporting the careers of assholes because of their music. Its disappointing.

I can't believe that fuckhead actually felt the need to personally respond to a live review on some guy's blog. Now I'm waiting for K-OS to show up on this board to personally respond to these comments. He's probably reading this right now. What a chump.
