Ok I had to start this here because no one else had yet...lol...still sleeping it off! DJFL where ya at? Such a fun time with Danko Jones last night as they crushed the barriers of rock and roll, very appropriately played at Broken City!! I was sooo pleasantly surprised to see them playing such a small venue. For sure that will keep them eating KD but what the hell when you're having so much fun right? Ah but when the new record hits then they can reap the rewards haha! If the one new song is any indication, it should be at least titanium, if there is titanium? Danko merits a titanium record in Canada! Why oh why are they not getting more fans in Canada is totally beyond me. But for the 150+ of us lucky sods in Calgary we were treated to a really big shew by a "really good band"...Danko loved that epithet hurled at them! So no more "YOU GUYS FUCKIN ROCK!" note to self. Ah I usually just scream my lungs out anyways, beyond the ability to form cogent thought or even words at that point of rocking beyond the speed of sound! So the band was as tight as always, and blew us all away with their musical mastery and confidence! We never really had a break as they threw it all at us and we ate it up like mother's milk! After the show they all came out and signed and chatted and submitted to the paparazzi...so very cool. Naturally I completely forgot all the questions I was going to ask Danko about punk influences, etc. Just getting close to him induced some sort of rock star daze in me that borders on groupieness that I can't stand...so I went and talked to Dan instead. So cool that he drummed for Bionic whom I totally love, and Damn 13 who I also saw, but for the life of me cannot remember where lol. The Get Down from Edmonton and Mad Young Darlings from Winnipeg both backed and they were impressive in their own rights.
All in all, great great show. Only wish my honey and my kid could have come. Next time please play an all ages please so my kid can come! He grew up listening to your cds of mine and he loves your music so much! He has his ipod full of DJ and Sleep is The Enemy wakes him up in the morning on his clock/radio/cd....Thx!!

Great review, thanks! They only played one new song? I will assume it was called Let's Get Undressed... otherwise, what was the title!? Dan is an awesome member of the band, and great guy to talk to. I think I sort of caught him off gaurd when I recognized him/called out his name after the show last time. He seems to be a great fit, and Danko and JC both commented on how awesome things are. They are playing great! Thanks again for the review... I take it you dont have any pics or a setlist? I think they are rocking Winterpeg tonight!

ohhhhhhh...DJFL so sleepy...so very very sleepy. I'm the first to bust out a "sleep is the enemy" but I needed a full day to recover from that Calgary gig, coolcatz. I'm still recovering. I came to Calgary for the Danko gig and to play some poker, and I'm still not in a crisp enough mindspace to play well. Damn you Danko Jones! Alrighty, everything coolcatz said about the gig was true, not exaggerated. The show was just like all Danko shows...rock rock rock. There were actually 2 new songs. Let's Get Undressed and Something Better. My sister and I steal the songlist from every show, so trust me on this. I got the setlist and youuuuuu doo-on't! Talked to Danko after the gig and he said that the Calgary gig was the first time they've played the song live. I told him both new songs seemed solid, and I definitely stand by that. Something better is a little more solid vs raucous sex rock that most Danko songs are. Danko also said that we're gonna have to wait 6 months for the album due to mixing, mastering etc etc. I told him thanks a fucking lot. lol. I really wanna hear those new songs on album. Anyway, my review of the music. They really had a wide array on the setlist. Old stuff, new stuff, and in-between stuff mixed all together about evenly and every song was solid. Danko mini-fucked the guitar riff after the first part of the first verse of the first song, Sticky Situation, and I booed and yelled "you suck!" hopin they'd know it was a joke. I don't think Dank heard me but we were right in front of JC and he gave me a funny look. Me felt so bad even through the 15 gallons of gin I'd had! Anyway, all the classics were in there. Mountain, Samuel Sin, Cadillac, Invisible, Play the Blues, etc etc, 2 new songs, and the crowd was rockin...especially where I was jumping. That coolcatz crew likes the band almost as much as I do! and that really is saying something. This is the first time I've ever been pushed off my spot right up front kuz others were pushing forward. If I couldn't have seen the band over coolcatz's friend's head, there's one 6'2" Jay from Jay and Silent Bob lookin dude who was gonna get his ass removed. I'm a peaceful man but I drove 12 hours to get to this f'in gig and ain't no need-a-haircut-hippie, Spicoli-lookin mofo gonna get in my way. Anyway, after the gig the guys really were amazing. I took so many pics after the gig and I was NOT alone. There was a long line of guys and some really hot girls...coolcatz ...wanting pics, autographs, drunken ramblings, "dude you fuckin rock"s, etc etc. And every member of the band accomodated all of us. Danko in particular. There was one drunk dude...I'm tryin to talk to Danko after the gig and this guy comes up and seriously NON-STOP talkin at Danko for 15 fucking minutes. Every time Danko tries to say something, this guy seriously interrupts him and keeps on rambling. I couldn't believe it. I'm thinking, "how often do you get to Listen to Danko Jones, and all you wanna do is Talk?". weak. Then his drunken buddy comes up and tries to setup some 3-way pic with them and grabs Danko around the throat from behind doin so. I tell ya. Danko nicely got the guy's arm off and was real nice about the whole thing. I wouldn't have been quite so nice. lol. I thought about showing Danko a couple wristlocks for just such an emergency but whatever. Anyway, as always, amazing gig, amazing band, amazing music, amazingly patient and appreciative of us drunkies. Life is good. I took 4 days of vacation and a long drive to come to the gig and I'd do it again 100 out of 100 times. These guys fuckin rock. This is my fave band of all time by a mile and it's a well-earned spot. Thanks again guys. Highlight of my year so far.

awww...thanks for the props djfl! My pal energy hunter and I really appreciate you taking some pix for us! And great write up...I am sooo lacking in the actual music dept. I used to get all caught up in songs and lyrics back in the day, but now I find all I really care about is the energy and the fun!!!!! But glad someone is still keeping track of the details! Thanks! I hear ya on the drunk bit....I am trying to cut back on drinking so I can concentrate on the energy part! Does not help that energy hunter is now hawking tequila for a mexican distro. LOL Soundman Corey seemed to like it too! But seriously, I think we should let Danko be a model for all of us. I really applaud his soberocity!
If you get a chance can you post the setlist too? thx

after each and every DJ gig we always hope that someone will pop in here and rave on a bit, still in shock, but somewhat coherent ;D...there's nothing worse that an unreviewed gig, its so much fun to read people's reaction to such an awesome band, so thanks for bringing it all to us so vividly from Calgary coolcatz, djfl, and energy, it was almost like being there. You guys do indeed, rock shit hot!!

"I have the setlist. I have the setlist. No time for loo-oosers. Kuz I have the setlist. Foooor the gig." Holy F-me I am tired. Imagine Homer Simpson singing it. Funnier now? God I hope so... Anyway, here's the official setlist taken right off the official sheet which my sis is probably gonna have laminated and/or bronzed. Sticky Situation Baby Hates Me Forget My Name Samuel Sin - the Danko not Raconteurs version Woogie Boogie Invisible Play The Blues Let's Get Undressed Mango Kid She's Drugs - this one's an OK tune eh coolcatz? Something Better Lovercall Cadillac Mountain 37 second intermission Rock Shit Hot Wait a Minute The Cross I'm Alive and on Fire Now for what it's worth, we all know Danko used to smack himself across the face during Mountain, but can't anymore due to really fucking up his eye. That's some hardcore shit right there. Anyway, at all the Danko gigs we go to since we heard that news last year, my sis slaps me across the face 1 then 2 then 3 times after each "My heart gets stronger, etc etc." At the other Calgary gig earlier this year, another fan caught on and slapped me in the face too! Anyway, I'm just sayin. For those who are down with it, the more the fuckin merrier. Imagine the whole front row at a gig getting loveslapped across the face during Mountain. We may make Danko cry.
