Man...the Juno's are in Edmonton. If the band is playing there, or are going to win the award, I am going. Heck, if the band is going to the Junos I should go.
Go Danko Go!

Well, if it was based on real music, Danko would win.

Yeah, they're in tough against Nickelcrap but only because there is no justice in the world. Danko SHOULD win, hands down. Just more incentive to the man and the band to write The Cross Part II.

Danko Jones does not have a snowballs chance in hell of winning.
Here in Canada we don't like our music to be too loud or edgy. Smooth it out. Tone it down. Overproduce the hell out of it. Make sure it's radio-friendly and has no guts. No punch. That's what works here.
Remember last summer when Toronto's then mayor Mel Lastman presented Nickleback with the key to the city? It's plain discust that makes my hands shake.
Last week on The Magical World of Rock, Danko did a show called "The Canadian Music Scene You Don't Know". He played two songs by a band called Bionic. Those two songs tore me to shreds so completely that I ordered Bionic's last record Deliverance the very next day.
What annoys me to know end is that a week ago, I didn't know Bionic existed, but ask me about Default, or Fefe Dobson or Pilate and I can tell you all about them. It's little wonder that the two angriest Danko Jones songs are about the Canadian music industry.
All right I'm done ranting. I'm calm...I'm cool-headed....

Yah, but that's how it is in any country. The Junos are Canada's version of the Grammy's. Ninety per cent of the stuff on the Grammy's is of the glossy, mainstream variety, too. "Non-mainstream" music is called that for a reason. If it "appeals" to the mainstream -- that includes shitloads of people who consume music but don't particularly live for it or love it -- nine times out of 10 it'll have the safe, catchy, glossy sound.

You're right. That kind of thing is not exclusive to Canada. For a lot of people music is just something in the background to hum along to while they're at the office. They want it to be comforting, not jarring. Whatever makes you happy, I guess.

No surprise, only one nomination for Danko Jones, once again the Canadian music industry shows its ignorance & corruption...like how can u ignore the best rawk band on the planet, let alone in Canada....but then again....we know the truth.

And don't calm down, man. This is not something in just Canada, it everywere, and we SHOULD get mad and drop-kick every fucking major record label, radio station and award show for that reason... As Danko Jones said it: WAKE UP!!! We want the good music to be played and to win the awards, not the shitty and bad.

hmm...I don't care. If they want to honor what I think is crappy: so what. I mean, we all have our own minds, it's not mainly the radio stations or awards or major labels that make the shitty music popular. It's the people buying it. And if they like it, who am I to judge? They probably think the music I listen to is crap too.

I'll compare this "mainstream" thing to me and movies. I don't care for movies. At all. I see the occasional one (OK, it's really rare) but I really cannot dare to try and sit through one of those acclaimed oh-so-subtle or oh-so-deep flicks the critics rave about.
The movies I can tolerate, I have to admit, are the ones with thin plots, the ones where I don't "have to think and follow every god-damned minute," and the ones that have either rock n roll in them or some eye-grabbing gal.
So, if I were a movie "fan" -- I'm not, but for the sake of argument we'll say so -- you'd call me a "mainstream movie fan."
So while there are millions of "mainstream movie fans" supporting flicks that include Adam Sandler, flicks with college-frat-boy humour and flicks with babes, the critics sit there scratching their heads saying "Boy, people are stupid. This movie sucks. Why doesn't anyone go see that one about the 16-year-old surviving on bread, water and books in her step-dad's closet in Zimbabwe?"
Point is, there are "more" "mainstream" fans of both movies and music. The size of this majority dwarfs those who actually "love" and "live for" either or both of these things. I consume music like it's going out of style but can appreciate that I'm in the minority. I know the Internet can make it feel like the "indie rock" world is bigger than it is, but really, it's puny.
Not to say Danko Jones doesn't have some level of "catchiness" to them, but as far as the whole package goes, not "mainstream" enough for these kinds of awards.
Speed on . . .
