I have had the distinct pleasure of meeting many of my favourite musicians over the years,and have many stories about how I was able to meet them,some took great patience and a long car ride to accomplish this feat. I already mentioned in the April Wine thread about my very first meeting with a "Rock Star". Here is a list of the others that I have met (stories will follow in future posts): Ace Frehley,Peter Criss Bruce Kulick,Vinnie Vincent,and Mark St. John from KISS  Alice Cooper,Bruce Dickinson(Iron Maiden),Russ and Darryl (Killer Dwarfs),Brent Doerner,Daryl Gray,Paul Hackman, Brian Volmer,and Greg "Fitz" Gerald(Helix),Peter Fredette , Paul DeLong(Kim Mitchell Band),Joe Rockman(Jeff Healey Band),entire Kick Axe band,Wolf Hoffman(Accept),entire Arc Angels band,David Wilcox,there have been a few more but I can't seem to recall them right now,brain fade. Any how that is most of them,anyone else have any such encounters? |

I've met Bruce Cockburn, Kim Mitchell, David Wilcox, Bobby Baker, Gord Downie, Gord Sinclair, Paul Langlois, Johnny Faye and Avril Lavigne. I've also had the privilege of working with Eric Schenkman (founder and guitarist of the Spin Doctors) on a couple of occasions. He is a monster player and a fine, unpretentious man.

All right here's one of my stories about meeting a "Rock Star". Bruce from Iron Maiden. My best friend and I were at the CNE Stadium in Toronto the summer of 1988 to see "Iron Maiden"on their Seventh Son of a Seventh Son World Tour....with opening bands "Guns 'N Roses" and "Zodiac Mindwarp and the Love Reaction"(what stupid name and horrible band)in support. Having to travel a couple of hours to get to Toronto and another hour or so to make our way downtown to see the show,we left fairly early to get there if we wanted some decent parking,and have some time to stretch after the car ride. We got to the stadium about four hours before showtime, and decided to take a walk around the grounds to check things out.As we made our way across the parking lot we could hear Iron Maiden doing their sound-check(outdoor stadium) so high-tailed to get to the fence near the one end of the field to see if we could see anything. We couldn't really see anything,because of the way the stage was set up on the field,but we did get to hear them play two songs before the sound-check was over. After they were done playing,I saw Bruce hopping on a Honda four-wheeler and go ripping around the stadium on it. I started yelling at him,not sure if he could hear me over the engine,but I yelled anyways.He turned our way once and I was still yelling,and I started waving my arms to get his attention and it worked.He rode over towards us to say good-day,we chatted for a couple of minutes,shook hands through the fence,then he excused himself and told us to enjoy the show...... Again,no autograph,but still a great meeting with one of the great voices in rock.Being at the right place,at the right time was really sweet. The show by the way,ranks as one of my favourite concert going experiences in my life(except for that Zodiac jerk band that is ). |

Hey Newt, that's an awesome story. We are very fortunate that we have someone with as much love and enthusiasm for music, and its perforrmers such as you. Of course you know that we are going to lock u up in a room and pump Danko Jones at ya for hours ;D ps: so i gather that u don't have any Zodiak music in your home library  |

The funny thing about that joke Zodiac Mind-twerp band, when we got back the next day and were talking with a couple of other friends about the show,the one guy said that the only band he would have wanted to see that night would have been that Zodiac band(and I use the word band very cautiously). How's that for dissenting tastes in music? We told him that they were absolute crap,and he said that we just didn't get his music,and I said "No....we just can't stand his music " |

Wow, that's awesome. The only "celebrity" I've had the pleasure of meeting was the amazing Mr. Danko Jones. I met him a couple of times and have a couple pics with him. He is really sweet and soft spoken in person. I met him at edge 102 studios, and me n my pal went to be extras in his "Lovercall" video. We didn't make it, but he was really kewl! We had to sit out in the hot sun all day, and he'd come out in between takes and sit outside with everyone. He talked to us about the music industry and people they've toured with. Answered all our questions, took pics, signed autographs. Then when he was performing on the Mike Bullard Show, he was actually standing in the audience line waiting in the crappy weather to get in and talking to people in the line. He seems totally down to earth, as if "celebrity status" hasn't gone to his head whatsoever! And that is very refreshing!

I see Kevin mention the guys from "The Tragically Hip" as ones he had met,I forgot to mention them as well in my original story.
My best friend played in a band that used the same practice facility as "The Hip" did in Kingston long before they ever got their first record deal.
The place was an old meat packing plant,which had the refigerator units converted into practice rooms for bands.
The Hip used the room next to the one used by my friends band,and we used to talk with them as both bands were coming and going from this place.We also used to go to the "Lakeview Manor" and watch them play occassionally. It's neat to see how far they have gone with their career, after getting to know them before they hit it big.

Another guy I forgot to mention is Jeff Pearce,the bass player of the band Moist(he also plays bass in David Usher's solo band)
I went through high school with Jeff,and still consider him a good friend.We had at least two classes each semester every year till we both graduated.
His family still live in a town not far from my place and I see him from time to time when he's home visiting.

The best story about meeting a "Rock Star" involves the time I met both Helix and Kick Axe. In 1985,Helix was playing the M-Centre in K-Town with Kick Axe opening up the show. When trying to get into the show,one of the "Red Coats" (M-Centre security) found the camera that I was trying to sneak into the show.They took it and my name,etc. so I could claim it after the show. Well during the break in between sets,one of the bands security team gave some back stage passes to a couple of friends of mine who just happen very beautiful young ladies .Anyways after the concert,I got my camera back,and went to find the girls and give it to them so they could snap some pictures for me. Well,while a couple of us were waiting for the girls to meet up with us after they met Helix,we hung around by the tour buses,just in case. Sure enough,while we were waiting out comes Kick Axe, but this time I was well prepared,and got the entire bands autograph. Well,I thought it would be great to get a picture of myself with them,so I went over to the door where the girls went in to try and get my camera back.The "Red Coat" working that door wouldn't let me talk to the girls,so I was basically having a very loud argument with this joker,when out comes Brian Volmer,lead singer of Helix.He sees me arguing with the "Red Coat" and walks over to the doorway and asks me what seems to be the problem. I told him I was just trying to get my camera back from one of the girls,and this idiot wouldn't let me. Brian took a look at the "Red Coat" stepped in front of him to take a look outside the door I standing at to see how many people were there with me,saw that there was only about 10 of us there,opened the door wide and ushered us all back-stage to party with him and the band. They had a cooler full of "Canadian" and offered us each a brew.Then each member of the band posed for pictures with me and my friends,signed autographs for us all.I got the chance to talk with each member of Helix for about an hour before they had to leave and head back to their hotel rooms. That is one of my best all time moments I have ever experienced at a rock concert. The best thing about this is,if that "Red Coat" hadn't taken my camera before the show,this may very well have not happened at all.I would have used up all of my film during the concert,and would not have bothered to give an empty camera to the girls,and would not have had any excuse to hang around after the show was over. |

I have a friend who does that already...lol when we were younger she was always "Metallica, Metallica" and I was always "Wu-tang, Wu-tang." If u want to talk about Metallica...talk to leosrule...she will jump up and down for joy, and kiss u for being a huge fan too! ;D

I'm pretty sure I saw Danko Jones going into the coat section at Eatons like 2 years ago, although I'll never really know for sure..
but I've met.. nickelback, brian and christian from ime, matt good a few times, josh homme, some of incubus, that's all i can think of now.. I wish I was a better talker to strangers and maybe I would've said more than "hi, how are you?" to these people...

Is it just me or is Biff Naked a smokin lil mamma jamma? I luv her, she's so bad a$$!
They should have the "Bad A$$" tour and it would include Danko Jones (the kings of bad a$$), Biff Nekkid, Disturbed and a whole bunch of other bandz. The only problem with that wish is - I think with the other bands I luv, there'd be conflicts between performers, so I guess it's just a pipe dream of mine for now. But it's a nice thought doncha think?

I've met a couple of dutch metal muscians (not to interesting for the majority of this board) as well as Byron Stroud of Strapping Young Lad and Matt Kelly & Marc Ornell of Dropkick Murphys for interviews I do for the online rock 'n' metal zine www.metalrage.com (check it out, quite some cool underground rock and metal action going on there). Especially Matt & Marc off the Murphys are two amazing personalities, very cool guys with a great sence of humor! |
